Ekiga is dead according to Gentoo

David Backer
A day of sadness has begun:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/627868

No, there is nothing I can do about it. I've lost my laptop recently and
have other things going on in my life.
I though I would write this to you fellows in hopes that the devs might
make a release because Gentoo does not drop something 99% of the time
without good reason & ekiga will loose even more distros as they
progress in the dev cycle.

- net-voip/ekiga-4.0.1-r1::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Pacho Ramos <[hidden email]> (27 Dec 2017)
# All Ekiga set is dead and broken for years, it relies on obsolete
# dead/libs that are also old and broken and upstream looks to not release
# newer ekiga ever. To keep this please go ahead and take care of it *and
# all the dependencies it also needs*. See bugs #626176, #460458, #589276,
# #638122, #641990, #633670, #624578, #600398, #627868.
# Removal in a month.

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

Thank you for sharing with us these bad but predictable news.  I regret
that people spend time to fix bugs in Ekiga, but me too I have too many
things to do and cannot afford to spend much time on Ekiga anymore.

Some bugs are simple to fix, such as libresolv bug or
https://bugs.gentoo.org/626176#c1, and I can certainly collect or do
some fixes and commit them and make a new release 4.0.2 this week, if
someone is willing to help.

But fixing all problems in Ekiga takes too much effort; for example
updating to a new ptlib/opal version is unaffordable for me.  The cause
is that new ptlib/opal 3.x releases make too many API changes for me to
keep track with.  For example, the API for IM has changed, cf.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=651837, it takes many hours
or a few tens of hours to make this change.  Moreover, new ptlib/opal
releases create new bugs too (regressions), and it takes too much effort
to find them, reproduce and inform their developers to fix them.

Kind regards,
--
Eugen

Indeed. Ekiga 5 is ready since 2 years except for the IM part. However, releasing it requires several hours of polishing, writing a new manual, updating the website, the ekiga.net platform, and so on.

I do not have the time anymore to dedicate all my evenings and all my week-ends to free software development.

It makes me more sad than you can ever imagine, but currently, there is noone developing on Ekiga itself.

I will probably try in a few weeks/months to finish what I can in the release because I use Ekiga 5 daily and it works well enough.

I work for companies that allow some open-source development.  As they
use open-source, they recognize that this is the cost - instead of a
license fee.

I moved on to linphone to get IP6 support.  One annoying limitation of
linphone, however, is that you can listen on IP6 or IP4 - but not both.
I still use diamondcard.us and ekiga.net - but mainly I use peer to peer
SIP with IP6.  I have to switch the config to IP4 to use
diamondcard/ekiga.net.   I could run linphone on IP6 and ekiga on IP4 -
but echo cancellation doesn't work with ekiga-4.0.1 on Fedora (maybe one
of the libraries).

Ekiga has a much better address book than linphone.  This is actually
even more annoying than switching between IP6 and IP4.

Trying to get the word out that you don't actually need telcos - other
than a humdinger of a network effect.  P-to-p SIP for the win!  Sure,
the "phone numbers" (IP6 addresses) are long, but it just goes in the
address book!
